When love travels across the ocean: Priyal & Varun’s destination Indian wedding in Portugal

Priyal and Varun carried their love story from Brooklyn to Azeitão, Portugal, where they chose to honor their families and traditions at Quinta da Conceição. Over two days, we witnessed something precious – genuine moments that couldn’t be staged, belly laughters, and tears that meant everything.

Day one: when tradition feels like coming home

The Haldi Ceremony: messy, beautiful, real

There’s something about the Haldi ceremony that strips away all pretense. When you’re covered in turmeric paste by people who’ve known you since childhood, there’s no room for performance.

Witnessing the way family and friends interact with the bride and groom while applying the paste tells a story of their personalities and relationship – some will be incredibly gentle while others will apply a full hand of the turmeric paste vigorously while laughing uncontrollably.

The contrast was everything: reverent and playful, sacred and silly, all happening simultaneously because that’s how real families work. These are the moments we live for as photographers – when people forget we’re there because they’re too busy being present with each other.

Mehndi & Sangeet

The Mehndi ceremony became what it was always meant to be: a gathering of women across generations, sharing stories while intricate patterns bloomed on hands and arms. We overheard conversations between aunts about their own wedding days, watched friends compare henna designs, and documented the quiet moments when older relatives took younger ones aside to share wisdom that doesn’t come on social media.

The food was passed from hand to hand, stories were told and retold, and everybody celebrated this rite of passage with them through joyful dancing.

Wedding Day: when traditions hold real meaning

Priyal and Varun didn’t choose multiple wedding traditions for the ceremony because they looked good in photos. Each one represented something significant to their families, their values, or their hopes for marriage. We watched as relatives engaged in some of the rituals and the love and care that they shared. What a precious thing to witness!
They also chose to do a first look both with each other and then with their close family members. It was really special as it was a moment of connection and a way to celebrate with the closest circle of people a very special day in their lives.

The wedding baraat was high energy and fluid: it was pure celebration. Varun’s arrival with his wedding party felt more like a family reunion than a performance. The music was loud, the dancing was uninhibited, and the joy was contagious in the way that only happens when people are celebrating something they truly believe in.

For Indian weddings especially, we understand that every ceremony carries weight, every tradition has meaning, and every family’s dynamics tell a story. We’re not here to make it just look pretty – we’re here to make it feel true.

A lot of people ask then: “What about formal photos? They are important too, right?” They absolutely are and we absolutely understand their importance as, most of the time, those are the photos that end up in the fire mantel at parents and grandparents houses. We are also very mindful of the time that is used to make them happen and try to make them as fast as possible so that you can go back to enjoying your party.

When couples ask us why people choose Portugal, the answer isn’t about Instagram-worthy backdrops or trending destinations, although we do have them. Most of the time couples have a connection to our country – either vacation they had in the past with an experience that really stood out due to our hospitality, the delicious food, the easy access to culture and its location.
