There are places in the world that don’t just host weddings. They hold them.

Terra Nostra is one of those places. Nestled in the heart of the Furnas Valley on São Miguel Island, it sits within one of the best green retreats in the world: a place where mineral rich volcanic thermal waters surface into a 240 year old pool and ancient trees lean over pathways. The hotel has been welcoming guests since 1935, and has since become an icon of São Miguel and the Azores.

For Dan, it was more than a beautiful venue. His family’s roots run deep into these volcanic islands. And there’s something profoundly moving about choosing to begin a marriage in the place where part of you already belongs, standing in a garden your ancestors may have once walked through.

The details that matter didn’t live in the décor, although it was exquisite. They lived in the quieter moments. The excitement Dan felt when he saw Sara walking down the isle, the little tear after exchanging their vows, the way Sara was incredibly calm. She was just herself: radiant, present. There’s an ease that only comes from two people who genuinely know each other: our job was simply to not get in the way of it and capture it with truth and care. That’s what we mean when we say love documented, not performed. 

We captured Sara and Dan through the day the way you’d follow a story you already love: with attention, with care, and with no desire to interrupt it. The ceremony in the gardens. The warmth of a dinner that felt less like an event and more like a long table of people who were genuinely happy to be together. The dancing that happens after everyone forgets there’s a photographer in the room. Those are the moments we look for.
